Digital Communication
How can we communicate safely on the internet?
Digital ETiquette
Be kind. Be courteous. Be respectful. Be responsible. Those four statements apply when talking to a person and having a conversation with them. They also apply when communicating online, whether through chat, email, social media, texting, video calling, or other forms of communication. Children should use appropriate words and avoid inappropriate language. No cursing or harmful words. Use caps lock, exclamation points, and other characters only when necessary.
When doing classwork, your writing should be appropriate. You wouldn't use texting language such as "lol" when writing an essay. Keep that language to communicate with your friends outside of school when appropriate. Emojis should not be used when writing an essay.

When you speak to someone in person, you watch what you say because you don't want to hurt their feelings. The same applies when speaking or chatting with someone online. Words can hurt people, so you need to be kind and respectful at all times. Watch the video on the left to learn more.

using public technology
When using technology at home, passwords are often stored on devices. When using public technology such as at schools, libraries, and other media centers, children need to be careful to not accidentally store passwords, pictures, and other personal information on public computers. In addition to taking care of the computers themselves as they are public devices, children need to be careful with what websites they visit, and what information they allow others to view, as they are located in a public area.
Video Games
As new games are introduced to children whether on tablets, cell phones, computers, or video game systems, parents and children need to be alert of the many features that are now available, especially those containing chat and other communication systems embedded. Popular games like Prodigy, Fortnite, and Clash of Clans allow users to chat with each other, whether through voice or messaging. Both parents and children should be alert about who they are communicating with. They should never reveal personal information such as phone numbers, email addresses, or home addresses. This trend of chat features embedded into games is relatively new and many parents do not know the dangers that they can cause if not careful.
